USM Faculty First Week 2019 has ended

The Office of the Provost is excited to present the second annual Faculty First Week, as we welcome faculty back to campus for the 2019-20 academic year. In addition to first-day college, school and university meetings, we are offering a variety of professional development sessions, faculty research presentations, free headshots from our university photographer, a field trip at Lake Thoreau, a start-of-the-year block party and more.

Please register for the individual events you plan to attend so we can manage venues for presentations, order refreshments and supplies, and track participation and feedback.

This workshop is aimed at mentors, including faculty, Directors and staff, and provides specific strategies for ensuring effective mentoring (and boundary-setting) is occurring in their own units, as well as learning how to respond to questions regarding Title IX and/or other boundary violations which may occur in the context of faculty/staff – student mentoring relationships.

1) Introduction to faculty-student mentoring, including a discussion of the importance of maintaining good boundaries in student-faculty mentoring relationships;
2) Title IX reporting;
3) Implementing a School-wide Title IX awareness campaign, and
4) “Lessons Learned” including tips and advice from veteran mentors on maintaining good boundaries with students.
